Artists who want their music to work across stereo streaming, Dolby Atmos playlists, and Apple Music Spatial Audio need to think about format and delivery differently than they did in 2023 or 2024.
Here is what experienced LA mixing engineers — the ones working regularly at Santa Monica facilities — are actually telling their clients about getting this right.
The LUFS Numbers That Actually Matter
The standard target that most LA engineers work to for stereo streaming delivery is an integrated loudness of -14 LUFS with a true peak ceiling of -1 dBTP. This is not arbitrary — it sits at or just below Spotify's normalization threshold, which means the platform will not turn your track down, and it leaves room for the mastering engineer to make the final call without being constrained by an over-compressed pre-master.
The nuance that a lot of independent artists miss: -14 LUFS integrated is a target for the finished master, not for the mix you hand to the mastering engineer. Your mix should come in somewhere between -18 and -23 LUFS integrated with peaks well below digital full. You are giving the mastering engineer headroom, not a finished product. Artists who hand a pre-master to a mastering engineer have typically already made decisions that limit what the mastering can accomplish.
Apple Music's Dolby Atmos content targets are different — the platform uses a separate normalization system for immersive content that targets approximately -18 LUFS with a different peak measurement methodology. If you are delivering spatial audio mixes, verify the current Apple spec with your distributor before submission; this is one area where specifications are updated more frequently than the general loudness conversation.
Format: What to Actually Deliver and to Whom

For stereo streaming delivery, the standard is: 24-bit WAV files at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz (44.1 kHz if you're not working in video, 48 kHz if you are), with the finished master at the target LUFS. Lossless delivery — WAV or AIFF, not MP3 — is standard across all major distributors including DistroKid, TuneCore, and CD Baby. The platforms transcode for their delivery formats.
What most LA engineers also deliver alongside the stereo master: a set of stems (drums, bass, guitars/keys, vocals at minimum) archived in case of future remixing or sync licensing opportunities. This is not a streaming delivery requirement — it is professional practice that costs almost nothing to do at session time and is very expensive to reconstruct later when a sync supervisor calls.
For Dolby Atmos delivery specifically: you need a facility with immersive monitoring. This is not optional. Mixing Dolby Atmos on headphones with a binaural render is better than nothing, but it is not a substitute for actually hearing the mix in a correctly configured Atmos room. The number can be right and the mix can still be wrong. LUFS is a measurement of loudness, not of balance, clarity, low-end management, or stereo imaging — all the things that actually differentiate a professional mix from a home mix.
The self-service versus engineer question is worth revisiting in the context of streaming delivery. If your project has real ambitions — a release you are pitching to editorial, sync licensing you are pursuing, a project you are submitting to labels — the streaming delivery chain is the last place to save money by doing it yourself. The savings at that step are small relative to the cost of the recording work already done, and the gap between a professional mix and a careful home mix is audible on any speaker above a certain quality threshold.
What Streaming Platforms Are Actually Listening For in 2026
Beyond the technical specs, there is a less quantifiable but important question: what makes a track get placed in editorial playlists? Editors and curators at Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon have said publicly that sonic quality is a factor in editorial consideration — not just the numbers, but whether the mix is clear, whether the low end is controlled, whether the stereo field is coherent. A technically correct file that is sonically muddy is not a candidate for editorial placement regardless of its LUFS reading.
This matters for Q4 releases in particular. The editorial teams curating holiday and year-end playlists are evaluating a high volume of submissions with limited time per track. A mix that requires effort to listen to — that fatigues the ear, that has a crowded low end, that sounds different on earbuds versus speakers — does not get the benefit of the doubt at submission time. The mix quality you deliver to editorial is part of the pitch, even when the pitch is technically just the audio file itself.
The Mastering Engineer Conversation
Independent artists frequently underestimate what a mastering engineer needs from them and overestimate what mastering can fix. The conversation most LA mastering engineers have with new clients covers a few consistent points.
First: do not over-process the mix before sending it to mastering. A mix with aggressive limiting, heavy saturation across the bus, or a squashed dynamic range gives the mastering engineer less to work with, not more. The master is supposed to finalize and optimize a mix that is already correct — it is not supposed to rescue a mix that is broken. Send the mix at a reasonable level (around -18 to -20 LUFS is common), in the format above, and let the mastering engineer do their job.
Second: reference tracks are useful and welcome. If you have a specific commercial release that you are using as a sonic target — a record that has the low-end balance you want, the stereo width you are going for, the overall character you are trying to achieve — tell the mastering engineer about it and provide a file if possible. This is professional practice, not an embarrassing admission that you do not know what you want. The best mastering sessions have a clear target and a clear conversation about how the submitted mix relates to it.
Third: mastering cannot fix arrangement or recording problems. Low end that is muddy because the kick and bass are competing for the same frequencies in the mix cannot be fixed in mastering. Vocals that are buried because the mix balance is wrong cannot be fixed in mastering. Reverb that is too long and washing out the transients cannot be fixed in mastering. The problems that mastering can actually solve are loudness and tonal balance — not fundamental mix decisions.
The Delivery Checklist Before You Submit
Before you send anything to a distributor, run through this list with the person who mixed and/or mastered your music:
- Integrated loudness at -14 LUFS ± 1 dB for stereo streaming delivery
- True peak ceiling at -1 dBTP or below
- File format: 24-bit WAV or AIFF at 44.1 kHz (or 48 kHz for video)
- No clipping on any channel in the final master file
- Stems archived and backed up in at least two locations
- Mix checked on at least three different playback systems (studio monitors, headphones, phone speakers)
- ISRC codes assigned and registered
- Metadata embedded (artist name, title, album, year, genre)
This is not exhaustive — your distributor will have additional requirements specific to their platform — but it covers the technical basics that cause the most common submission problems.
